I'm serious, they run a rope around the pitch - it is a park pitch, no turnstiles either

Check out the highlights from our visit there last season and you'll see what it's like.BartonRaz wrote:You can't be serious?! So it's effectively a park pitch? Oh and how do you pronounce Olney? I think I'm saying it wrong when I say Ol-ney, rather than O-ney?

They will usually come around with a collection box for you to make a contribution to.Sara Pascoe wrote:I was sure that Bobos was taking the piss when he was describing it to me. That's absolutely hilarious. So if there aren't any turnstiles (presumably) will it cost anything to get in (when I say get in, there's clearly nowhere to get into!)?

The spelling of Olney has changed many times over the centuries with O L N E I recorded in the Domesday Book. The current spelling of O L N E Y was settled on in the 18th century. The various spellings probably account for the pronunciation by long standing residents as Oney and some newer residents as Olney. Whilst this causes some light-hearted banter between Olneyites and other Olney residents both pronunciations are acceptable.

Of course The Domesday Book was written by the Norman French who "corrected" grammatically what they could not speak for themselves. If you go back to the original name (Ollaneg) it mean's Olla's island (Olla being a personal name of the founder, followed by the descriptive of the place "eg", which means island or more accurately in this case "land surrounded by water"). Olney is bordered on a bend by the Nene but there were/ are some streams which almost made/make it an island, hence the Anglo Saxon's reference to this.
Because of this, the "L" should be pronounced IMO so I say OLney. To leave out the L leaves it meaningless.
I'll be there with 2 more

Don't be fooled by "there is a large car park" - it isn't that big. Be prepared to park elsewhere in the town and walk.

Perhaps, but for this level, I'd say it can be classed as a 'large car park', looking at the google image and street view I'd say there are 75-100 spaces which is a lot bigger than most down here and bigger than some of the conference grounds we visited.Turveyman wrote:Don't be fooled by "there is a large car park" - it isn't that big. True, but it is well patronised by the rugby club so I would still allow plenty of time before kick off.
