Support our manager and team

Post by smoky »

I cannot believe some of the negative comments that are appearing on this forum. We have a fairly inexperienced team who are learning and improving every game,it will take time and we need to support them and encourage them, not pull them to pieces. We also have a young and inexperienced manager who is doing his best to give us a team to be proud of and is Diamonds through and through on a very limited budget.Dont let us keep looking back to what might have been or even to the dizzy heights that we achieved but look forward to what we might achieve with this new group of players. If we finish low down in this league is that not an achievement, don't start talking about us being in a lower league and taking away all the hard work that has put in to get us this far.

Yes agree. But the results matter. And that is the bottom line.

The negative talk about it would be good for the club to be at step 4 is ridiculous.

But negative talk about the manager comes from results, and that will always be the case. How many games has Burg took charge of now does anyone know? Our old squad last season and the new, anyone know the W D L

It's not fair to include pre-season when judging anyone on results.

Some of the comments on the Hitchin thread were a bit daft and unnecessary but frustrations, albeit this early, are understandable. I'd have bet a very significant amount of money that we'd start the season with this sort of points haul based on what I'd seen in pre-season, and here we are, living up to those expectations.

What I didn't expect though was for us to be as competitive as we have been. I thought we'd be shipping goals left, right and centre and we aren't.

Burgess should be given time but what we can't and shouldn't accept is being substantially worse than we were last season with what we believe is a similar or unchanged budget. I've seen enough to suggest to me that we will be fine with a couple of additions. We've got to make those additions sooner rather than later though.
They say we've lost our money we're not famous anymore.....

so from my calculations if we maintain this competitive form in the league (1.25 points per game) we would have finished 11th or 12th last season ?

But I thought Jon Dunham said that both the Diamonds and the Poppies overachieved last season and did very well to even be in contention for the play off's.

The Poppies apparently also have the same budget as last season - like us and also just like us - on paper their fans don't think their squad looks as good as it did last season.

Overachieving isn't going to happen every year, maybe we shouldn't be so expectant.

Last year we were in a fantastic position but for whatever reason Burg failed to motivate that squad of players for the final 2 games of the season, then there was the comment about not crying his eyes out over losing 2 key players, 2 vital parts of our team, so there will be a few doubts in his ability but with that said, we aren't a trigger happy club so he will get the time to work with his new squad and I think he will come good.

Those GPS vests though, do many part time teams have them? if we were full time I can see why a manager would analyse the players because he has all week training with them to influence them... but at Southern League level? if you are spending a training session working on the squads GPS movements from the last game when do you fit in the basic training.
  • Play it out from the back.
  • 1 up front.
  • Man gets one good result via a new manager bounce and thinks he's Pep Guardiola.

What is it with knocking the GPS vests, say they cost £1000 and I don’t know if that’s true but if you can get one player to develop and be £25 worth more a week it’s paid for itself, and that’s 1 player!!
Surely we need to be different and develop players, I assume these vests ensure we are running the right amount during the games and therefore not getting out worked, I’m no expert but I trust the people who say they will help us.
We can’t go back to just chucking money at journeymen!!!

At face value competitive split looks very even W5 D5 L6 but its worth noting 3 of Burge 5 wins came in his 1st 5 games when the team were still buzzing from that incredible run that Peaksy put together. Since then he has 2 wins from 11 games (4 of those games with new squad) .
