Moors opening their own pub! - The Evo-Stik League Northern Premier

Following Red Oak Taverns’ acquisition of The Salvin Arms, the pub will proudly re-open its doors as ‘The Moors Tavern’ in August as Jason Ainsley's side make their debut in the EVO-STIK NPL's top flight after winning promotion as runners-up and play-off winners.

Red Oak Taverns and the Moors are set to carry out a substantial refurbishment of all areas of the pub over the coming weeks before renting the premises from the pub company for at least the next five years.

The tavern near their home at The Brewery Field will be open all week and excited Moors officials hope it will quickly become part of the matchday routine for thirsty fans, home and away.

Spennymoor Town's CEO Bradley Groves said: “The new Moors Tavern will act as a social hub for all associated with our club and the local Spennymoor community, both on match days and throughout the week.

“Visiting away fans will be welcome before and after matches and we hope the pubs proximity to the ground will encourage fans to mix socially and visit before games.”

He added: "This isn’t just a project for the football club. It’s the re-opening of a much-loved pub, so this is for the whole town."

Mike Rowcroft, the club's director of supporter and community engagement, said: “Ever since we lost the clubhouse to a fire in 2003 the supporters have been without a real focal point to congregate before and after the game.

"The announcement of the opening of the Moors Tavern is going to be a major boost to the supporters and the club alike and one more facility to improve the supporters’ match day experience for the new season and beyond. The bar in the main stand is very well attended on match days but the size is a limiting factor in the sort of facility that we want to provide."

He added: "The refurbished Moors Tavern will be open seven days a week serving not only the club on match days but the wider community of Spennymoor. The clubhouse has been a long time coming after a few false starts but ultimately, having seen the plans in store, the wait will have been worth it.”

At least if we did the is a chance the place wouldn`t run out of Doonbar between 1.30 and 2.15 every home game without fail, you could put the Welly Board in charge of that place and it would probably show signs of improvement.

Never set foot in the place. Isn't a just restaurant that sells a bit of beer?

Tbh, I've only ever been in there for the food, but there is a section for people to drink, and there are a number of our fans and visiting fans (when they have turned up) usually prior to every match drinking.

On a serious note, it will be worth keeping an eye on this, since if successful, it will bring Spennymoor further income, along with embedding themselves into their community. You only have to see how their attendences have grown almost year on year, to suggest they seem to be on the ball in terms of engaging with people. As far as I'm aware, they're not being bankrolled.

Yes I realise that and probably used by many home and away fans who like a sit down cooked meal but it's owned by Whitbreads and compliments the adjoining hotel food and beverage wise. I choose to spent my money within the confines of the ground as I consider that this is an essential revenue stream for our club.
I think the Spennymoor situation is different in so much as it was a vacant pub available for a new tenant which presented an opportunity for that club. Location is important because as we know RDFC were never able to capitalise on local trade when they experimented by opening Strikers Bar on non-match days during the evening.

Sure, my suggestion to buy to Dog & Duck is mainly tongue in cheek, and whilst they're taking over a vacant club, it does illustrate out of the box thinking on their part, and an interesting story from non-league.

I completely agree with you about spending money in the ground, the only time I've eaten at that pub has been on a non match day (for me, Haydn wins hands down when it comes to food). That said, those who are going into the Dog & Duck for a pre-match pint, rather than in the ground, what could be done to tempt them into the ground?

Well we have a vastly improved clubhouse after the recent fire renovations, albeit it's still on the small size when there's a large crowd but it's handicapped by a dreadful range of drinks but as that's under the control of the Doughboys it's outside our control. On the other hand there is superb local real ale, wine and a better range drinks in Dale's Bar but no internal space to sit down apart from outside on warm days in early season.
