One thing about blokes from Australia is that their hearts and humour are always in the right place!

Mr. T. B. Bechtel, a City Councilor from Newcastle, was asked on a local live radio talk show, just what he thought about the allegations of torture of suspected terrorists. His reply prompted his ejection from the studio, but to thunderous applause from the audience.


HIS STATEMENT:
'If hooking up one raghead terrorist prisoner's testicles to a car battery to get the truth out of the lying little camel shagger will save just one Australian life, then I have only three things to say,' 'Red is positive, Black is negative, and make sure his nuts are wet.'

My first reaction on reading that :
This is clearly some bigot who believes anyone a bit different from himself is guilty until proven innocent, and is to be thought of as non human. Pretty much how the Nazis thought of non aryennes.

After all Jean Charles de Menezes fitted the description "suspected terrorist". He was just a guy on his way to work in London. He was'nt Australian or British and the police did suspect him of being a terrorist. I suppose he might have favoured being electrocuted to being shot dead though.

Having said all of that! I do accept that there is a grain of sense in what he said :
Protecting the many, at the expense of the few is justifiable. If you genuinly believe that someone is able to give you information which will prevent a terrorist plot, then obtaining that information should overide the wellbeing of the suspect.

What is particularly unhelpful though is the language in which he chose to express his view. Using words guaranteed to offend millions of innocent human beings is clearly stupid. It is clearly the distance and lack of understanding and tolerance between North African cultures and the west which exacerbates the tensions which already exist.

There may have been some worth in what he was trying to say, but the way he chose to say it reflects the kind of attitude which is likely to make a bad situation worse.

I'd say that if you get enough people like that in the world on both sides then you can wave goodbye to the planet.

Totally agree with you Phil. The trick is to strike the balance between the person that can give you information to save lives, and the person who is being tortured who is innocent, and who will just give you "information" to stop the torture.
