Why describe it as an 'attack'? Jake ended up in hospital with a broken jaw, witnessed by enough people to confirm that it was an attack.

Eh? You're questioning why it is referred to as an attack then saying it was an attack?? :?: Or are you questioning why it is in quotes?
In which case, the dictionary definition may explain why it may not be classed as an attack... 'an act of violence that is intended to hurt a person or damage a place'. Not sure that he deliberately went out and intended to hurt Jake in the way he did.
Also an attack is....'an attempt by a player or group of players to score goals or win points' . Certainly not so in Buckby's case. :P
