Found this, allegedly from 1890/1900:

Yes I found that this afternoon and emailed it to bozzer.

For what it's worth I think they started out in the 19th century (founded in 1889) with a red kit, changed at some point to green and white in the 50's/60's and reverted back to red during the 70's/80's from what other posters have mentioned. Hence the red on the RDFC crest.

Rushden traditional colour was Red, that's why nickname of Russians, although I think we played in yellow for a bit.

I definitely remember a yellow away kit but not ever a yellow home kit. The colours I saw us in were red home and blue and yellow away. Although I only started in 1987 so they may have worn yellow before that

Other people will tell you that "Russians" comes from the locals way of saying Rushden in the early part of last century as it sounded like the "d" was dropped when said quickly.

Migration to Rushden has diluted the dialect somewhat in the past hundred years so to our modern ears it doesn't ring true.

Anybody remember the ITV Series 'Hunters Walk' televised in the early 70's which apparently used the old Rushden Police Station and the interesting local dialect?

They also filmed several scenes on location throughout the town, as my parents often remind me about.

Yes, the car my Dad had at the time was featured on the titles.

You may have heard of Air Ada, a cartoon strip featured in one of the local papers, might have been the Rushden Argus. It went something like this..................Weir juhfind that? I ent see it fer dunkiz yeerz. Pull up a cheer an’ siddewn.

This was posted on the RDFC Memories Facebook page by Griff Chamberlain who asked for it to be posted here because he is not registered on this Forum.

"Back to where it all started! There has been a discussion on the Diamonds forum concerning the colours of the old Rushden Town, with a lot of incorrect statements. Not being a member of the forum I cannot comment but it is worth adding a few things here from my own memories as a long standing fan of both Rushden Town and Rushden and Diamonds. I regularly attended Rushden Town matches from the mid 1960s to the mid 1970s come rain or shine, first team or reserves. With regards to their colours during this period, hopefully in the correct order, shirts were white and green stripes, then all green followed by green with white sleeves, and white shorts in all instances. Second strip was all blue shirts. The red did not appear until the 1980s. With regard to their nickname, The Russians, this was nothing to do with the colour red, but a corruption of the name Rushden in local dialect. I still have a rosette somewhere in the loft from this period which is in green and white with the words Russians on it.
My granddad, who took me during those days, often told me that during the war years they played in a black strip. I have never found any contributing evidence for this, and only have his word for it.
During the 60's/70's the big local derby was against the Diamonds, who played in red and blue stripes, and a crowd of 1000 was regularly seen at Hayden Road on such occasions. They were big rivals and when the merger was announced there was some trepidation about supporting it. However many years had passed since that rivalry and the teams had not played each other in an equally long period. One big coup back in them days was Rushden signing Diamonds striker Chris Smith. I was the proud morning paper boy to his house.
If anyone can add, correct or comment on these memories then please do. They are memories and all memories do get some rose tints after all these years."

If you're thinking what I think you're thinking Jon, I think it would be nice to have a 'special' kit that commemorates 25 years of Rushden and Diamonds, as oppose to our move to Rushden.
