Apart from a 20 minute spell we were poor. Too many times we gave the ball away, their two wingers were very good

Not much entertainment on a bitterly cold night.

Looking at the video of their winning goal, there was very little protection from our defenders for Ben who was hustled by their striker and an A1 inch perfect in swinging delivery from the corner which may have been prevented if a defender had been on the back stick. Memories of Marcus Kelly and his similar delivery in our single goal winner against Cambridge United many years ago.
Credit to Needham Market who have now visited Hayden Road three times and remain unbeaten here. We owe them one in the return fixture.

As others have said we could have done without half time coming during our longest prolonged period of pressure. Had we have gone in at the break 2-1 (which looked likely with the way were dominating) , I would have fancied us to go on and win the game.

Credit to Needham though they defended well all night, but perhaps our more direct style of attacking down the middle helped them remain more organised and able to deal with our attacks. The times we did get balls across the box, more so in the first half, we looked very dangerous with the ball often pinging around in the area. The tip over the bar their keeper pulled off from Nab's bicycle kick was a great reaction save!

For whatever reason though we didn't really use the wings as much (until late on) in the second half and we seemed to be a bit flatter, which was a bit disappointing.

Looking back at their goal on the video on twitter, it almost seems like a "planned" corner routine. Did they spot we were defending with no man at the back post in an earlier corner? The way their striker nudges Ben back onto his line to make sure he is not able to come and collect the ball and gives it a clear path into the back post, where there was no defender to be found. Perhaps I'm being stupid, but it just seemed like that looking back at it. Their first goal was a great strike mind you.

Overall I though we were worthy of perhaps at least a point, neither team created many chances on a bog of a pitch (fair play to getting the game on though as I gather it was waterlogged the day before) and it certainly wasn't a game for the purists. Alas we came away with nothing.

Still well in the Play-Off shake up though, albeit with our the games in hand. Saturday against Redditch gives us the ideal opportunity to bounce straight back against the leagues whipping boys. Hopefully they'll be a bigger crowd in what with it being pay what you want and Duane Darby being the manager of Redditch. Anything less than 3 or 4 nil would perhaps be a disappointment.

Then the real test comes when our next 5 games are against the 5 teams above us in the table occupying 2nd- 6th place!  February is shaping up to be a season defining month that's for sure!
