I am led to believe that a black youth was shot by a white police officer last week. it apparently transpires that the youth had a fake gun on him and it has led to (racial) tensions.
Plus it is a way of venting anger against authority.
I wonder how quickly France can build an Olympic village.

Its looking really serious. We had similar problems in the suburbs of Paris back in 2005, but it was mainly setting light to cars, not so violent as what we are seeing on the bbc, and not destroying and looting shops like that as I recall.

I know that you were joking about the Olympics, but I dont think there is much envy here for hosting the Olympics in the present economic climate.

I hope that UK manages to get this under control quickly. I'm no fan of Mr Cameron and his chums, but I dont think this wanton looting and destruction solves anything. Just makes more peoples lives miserable.

It's raining in Brum so the mobs have gone home or not bothered coming out. Been out on the triple murder in an area of Brum today, three guys trying to defend their business deliberately run over.

Bring back Hanging.

Was in Brum mags court till half twelve last night dealing with rioters.

Mildly scary that you can be arrested for 'having an article of clothing with the intention of disguising your features' which includes hats and gloves.

One guy stole stuff from Adidas in Brum and the next day had an attack of conscience and handed himself in to police.

Another lovely ex army guy had assaulted and racially abused officers who were trying to investigate shots being fired at police by a gang the night before.

It's amazing how varied those hauled through, you can't specify the ethnic group, or background that people involved all came from. There were working class white men, middle class black men, working class asian men, and any combination of them.
