Well when we do get back to the league...

Post by Bob's Bitch »

We've got a very comfy (without being complacent obviously) 3 and a bit weeks coming up with the following games:

K*ttering (A)
Histon (A)
Barrow (H)
Wrexham (H)
Hayes (A)
Grays (A)
Eastbourne (H)

Now add into the mix a home game against Chester which could (and in my opinion should if possible) be played between Hayes and the Grays games. The idea being to keep the momentum going in this run of lower mid-table fixtures. Not counting chickens or anything but I can see another winning run with all of those above being 'W's. That would put us on 60 points with 31 played, a great position to get into the play-offs.

Looking at the rest of the fixtures I can't really see a team (bar Oxford) that we couldn't beat. The only things that will mess up a possible mahoosive run of wins is if we beat Workington and draw someone annoying in the Trophy or if our squad is fucked in the transfer window. So maybe we should play a reserve side up t'North, bring back Smith, put him in the side, play Pattison, Beecroft etc. and blood a few youngsters a la Arsenal in the Carling Cup. ;)

To be honest I can't see us not making the play-offs really, has anyone got the balls to disagree with me? Well?! :D

Alright I'll step up.

K*ttering - never predict a local derby as a win. We all want it so much, but so do they. You can never predict them.

Histon away on a tuesday in January. Histon being a mostly bogey side for us. Nailed on loss I'm afraid.

Barrow at home. Well if they play anything like they did at their place in the league... but then again they have some decent results, they will probably be more than happy to sit back for a draw. Draw without Tomlin, win with him.

Wrexham - unknown quantity. Table says we should be capable of turning them over at our place, but again without Tomlin I can see us failing to nab the win here. Just think we are a bit lightweight up front and without the extra focus from defenders and crosses into the box he gives it will be much harder.

Hayes away - well today they defeated AFC Wimbledon. Despite being poor here they nabbed a goal and lost by one. We found it hard to score against them. On their own patch who knows?

Grays - Well this is one we should win but it is just like us not to. Grays are in a relegation dogfight which should soon be over.

Eastbourne. Be wary of underestimating them, at their place they weren't a bad side. At our place should be looking for a win though.

Probably say 10pts without Tomlin, 12-15 with him still here, leaving us in a similar position to now really. And with some difficult games left like Luton at home, Mansfield away, Stevenage at home, Oxford twice, Wrexham away (normally a difficult place to go except for last season), I really can't see us making it, not with the forward line we have right now.

The FA Trophy is an important competition for us IMO. I also think we'll probably just miss out on the play offs, but even if we were already in the play off places I'd still want to see us giving everything we've got in the trophy. It's a competition we have a great chance of winning, and winning games breeds confidence, regardless of who the opposition is or the competition. Workington showed in the FA cup game that they are no pushovers, despite the comfortable scoreline, so we should be going there with our stongest possible team. Plus, I'm not driving a 530 mile round trip and paying for a B&B in a grim northern town in the middle of winter just to watch our reserves! ;)

I'll echo all of that Dave. It was one thing to field a few fringe players in the Setanta Shield, but we should put out the best XI possible in the Trophy. A good run in that is more likely to bring the fans back to Nene Park for a semi-final than winning those consecutive FA Cup and league games has been.

The tricky thing about rearranging games in the next month is not only the chance of them being postponed again due to the weather, but also the fact we are still in the Trophy. The week between the Hayes and Grays game is reserved for a possible Trophy replay - and of course if we do beat Workington the Hayes game will need rearranging.

Blimey are we safe from relegation yet  ;)

I think the Trophy is also an important competition for us to do well in, by all means maybe play one or two fringe players, maybe Beeky or Patto, but i definaately think we should be taking it serously, and try and get the day out at Wembley!!!
