Step 4 - 3rd Place Promotion best PPG document

Post by Trek »

Another interesting document worth keeping an eye on that takes into account best points per game (PPG) and how it might affect automatic promotion from each Step 4 division.

The caveat on this document that there may be 20 clubs promoted from Step 4 has been confirmed by Thurrock’s Chairman, Tommy South, announcing that they will fold at the end of the season.

The 20th club promoted from Step 4 will be the club losing one of the 6 play off finals with the highest PPG.

All getting a bit silly now and sure with some Clubs bound to come across unforeseen problems over the coming months ( that's possibly an anagram for "spent what we didn't have pushing for promotion") it is likely to get worse. Good trivia question in a few years time, how did ........... get promoted from step 4 in season 2017-18, they finished 6th 24 points behind the league winners and then lost the playoff final 6-0.

Of all the clubs challenging to be the 19th promoted club by virtue of their points per game record only eight currently have a ppg of more than 2.0.
In the Evo Stik North, there are South Shields (2.38) Scarborough (2.18) and Hyde (2.16) but two of them will get automatic promotion anyway.

In the Evo Stik South it is only Alvechurch (2.08), but they look certain to take the second place behind already promoted Basford.

There are no teams contesting the third place in the Bostik Ryman League North and South that have a ppg of more than 2.0.
Nor is there any team in the Southern League West.

In the Southern League East Beaconsfield (2.16) AFC R & D (2.08) and Hartley Wintney (2.0)

So on current figures if we were to finish third only Hyde (2.16) have a better record than Diamonds. This assumes Beaconsfield and Hartley finish in top two.

We also know that the team with the best ppg that are losing Play Off finalists will also be promoted, owing to Thurrocks demise and I would not be surprised if at least one more place becomes available as it is rumoured Lowestoft may fold.

I believe this means that if the team with the best ppg reach their play off final they will be promoted win or lose!

I think Hyde have this wrapped up now. They only have one game to go with a PPG of 2.17. Even if they lost their last game, they would end the season on 2.11 with Hartley only able to get 2.09 assuming they win their last 2 games. No only league have teams on ppg of 2 or above.

Assuming Hartley finish third and reach play off final they would be promoted even if they lost the final as 21st promotion spot.
